Special Dispatch to the BOSTON JOURNAL -18 Feb 1867
The inquest in the case of Ingalls Damon, the old man whose remains were found in the ruins of his barn, which was burned Wednesday evening, was concluded on Saturday (Feb 16) and resulted in the arrest of Edward P. Hinman, the husband of Damon's daughter.......The testimony on Thursday, the first day of the inquest, was not conclusive except as to the facts that the remains were those of Damon and that the deceased and Hinman had quarreled in November.
Hinman testified that he was at Damon's house with his wife on the afternoon of the fire , but did not see Mr. Damon, though there a half an hour and that he had not seen him since December. Said he knew nothing of the fire until told the next morning. Went there to get his wife's clothes. He gave an account - but not a very full one- of his whereabouts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The inquest was adjourned to Saturday at which time it was developed that Hinman admitted to a wirness that he had stolen five ten dollar notes from the old man when he called there Wednesday afternoon, and that it laid loose in a drawer. Other witnesses testified to Hinman's paying out sums of money in Wednesday morning.
There was testimony in regard to tracks which corresponded with those of Hinman.
The jury returned a verdict that deceased came to his death by the hand of Hinman between 3pm on Tuesday and the last time the deceased was seen on Wednesday at 9 pm.
An examination was held today at Town Hall, North Reading..... C. P. Dadd appeared for the accused. But a small amount of evidence was offered and the examination was adjourned to Monday Feb 25 at East Cambridge, and the prisoner was remanded to the jail at that place.
Hinman is a fine looking man, about twenty-two years of age, and over six feet in height. He asserts his innocence and appears willing that full investigation should be held. His wife is blind and thirty-six years of age. They have been married three years and have one child."
