bullet  General Notes:

According to Little's History of Weare, Samuel and his family came to the Sugar Hill area of Weare in 1767.His brother Jacob had purchased land there and sold to Samuel 27 acres on the north end of lot 93, range 7. He built his house where now (1888) is the Merrill place. The first house was 30 rods south of the present one.
Samuel was from South Hampton and had married there and all of his children were born there prior to the move. It is unknown when he died. A list of taxpayers for Weare covering the years from 1788 - 1793 lists a Samuel and this could have been him but could also have been Jacob's son b. 1761. In 1810 it lists a Samuel Straw which would have made him about 72 years old but his brother Jacob had a son Samuel who would have been 49 and his brother Israel had a 23 year old son at this time. The name Samuel appears on the tax rolls for 1820-1850 but probably Samuel, s/o Israel who remained in the area.
It is recorded that a Samuel Straw signed the ASSOCIATION TEST for Weare June 6, 1776 and this was no doubt he for the son of Jacob was b. 1761 and would be only 14 or 15 and too young to sign. (had to be over 16). His brother Israel's name appears alongside.

Straw, Samuel, Private, Capt.John Walton's co., Col. Brooks's regt.; enlisted Sept. 27, 1776; discharged Oct. 6, 1776; service, 15 days, including 5 days (101 miles) travel home. Roll dated North Castle.

In 1776 Samuel and his brother Israel were chosen to serve under Capt Samuel Philbrick for 2 months service to the Army in New York. Col Daniel Moor had requested of the town of Weare to provide 16 men to march to NY and gave them a bounty of $20.00.They were to meet at the house of Robert McGregore in Goffstown.
In researching the NH Library records there is a notation that a Samuel Straw went to York ME for the Rev War for 2 months. It is not known if this is he.
