Bruce Joseph Alphonsus Hickey
February 10, 1942 - June 04, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce Joseph Alphonsus Hickey on Friday, June 4th, 2021, at the age of 79. He passed away peacefully with his son Sean (his Rock) by his side after a short battle with cancer, in Stephenville. He was predeceased by his parents Mary & Pat as well as his brother Pat Hickey.
Words cannot express the love and joy that Bruce brought to everyone and every situation. His smile was contagious, his laughter could fill an entire room and he made friends with everyone he met. He was always the life of the party, or most times, he WAS the party. He was known to crack jokes, or curse like a sailor when he was at the receiving end. No matter what, Bruce was always jolly and having fun.
Bruce was famous for his love of cooking (especially his cabbage rolls, although sometimes flavored with a hint of mint), playing broomball for over 5 decades, spending time with his 4 children who he loved beyond belief, having the daylights scared of out him, drinking rum, his carpentry skills, looking through every flyer to find the best deals, beating all the young fellers in squash and ping-pong and of course cheating at cards \endash just ask his brother Ben.
Beneath Bruce's comedic personality there was a brilliant mind. He graduated High School at the age of 16 and he was eager to start his career so he joined the Catholic Priesthood in 1960 where he graduated with a B. Arts. He quickly realized that a life without women and drink was not for him and went to U of P.E.I where he graduated with his B.Ed. He became a Teacher (Stephenville Amalgamated 1962-1964, J.R Smallwood Collegiate 1964-1966), then later a Principal in Deer Lake in 1966 - 1968. He moved back to Stephenville in 1968 to teach at the College of the North Atlantic as an Instructor where he retired at the age of 48.
Bruce met his true love Hazel at the age of 77, his true partner in crime who could keep up with him in drinks and whit. The adventures they shared over the last two years were endless. Though they met late in life, they lived and loved like teenagers although he swore he would never get on the back of her skidoo or motorcycle because of her need for speed.
When Bruce found out he was sick he didn't shed a tear, with his self-appointed "rock" by his side he sent out loving videos to his family simply asking for them to always smile and remember the good things \endash just as he was doing.
Bruce is survived by his 4 children who now have to fill big glasses of rum and tell a joke in his honor \endash sons: Sean *His Rock* (Renee), Bruce (Alex); daughters: Deana (Jack) and Lisa; mother of his children, Genie Hickey; brothers: Ben *card cheater* (Marie) and Don; sister Mary *Miss Humphries* (Earl); grandchildren: Chauna, Maddison, Chase, Josh, and Jess; great grandchildren: Nevaeh, Vada, and Hannah; partner Hazel Flynn (daughters Debbie, Kelly, and grand-daughter Kendra); stepchildren: Dennis (Diane), Bruce (Janelle) and Shannon (James); step-grandchildren: Grace, Victoria and Jamie; mother of stepchildren, Kay Pilgrim.
Special acknowledgement to his great friends Kathy Slaney and Debbie Lynn Jeffries. A big thank you for going above and beyond during the family's time of need to Dr. Shelia Dwyer and nurses Brittany, Caitlyn and Hailey. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
As per Bruce's request, cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of life at a later date.
