Prior to 1790 Census, Waterboro, York Co., Maine was named the Massabesic Plantation, owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Valentine Straw and Clement Moody plus other inhabitants signed in 1785 a Massabesic Petition to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for their land recordings and plot surveys that were long overdue in what would later become Waterboro, York Co., Maine. This petition is at the Augusta, Maine Archives. (research of B. Moody)

Other sources include IGI files; census records and headstones from Hope Cem in Waterbury, VT. Other early settlers of the last name of Straw in Waterbury, VT include William 1800 a son, David 1800 a son and Simeon 1810 another son. Feb 2001 via e-mail: courtesy of Annmac@aol.com: per The Hamiltons of Waterborough (Maine) there is a notation that Valentine Straw was elected at a town meeting on 5 April 1787 as the "Pownd keeper". Stray animals were kept there until their owner claimed them. They had to pay a fine. On April 5, 1787 The town voted Vallentine in and the following spring they voted to build a town pound near Tobias Leighton's land 30 feet square and 7 feet high. Capt. John Smith was paid $12.00 for building it. He is mentioned as Vanlantine Straw as one of the original petitioners for the Plantation of Massebesick. Again it says he was pound keeper.

From : dwalsh <dwalsh@hls-inc.net> Sunday, March 28, 2004 Subject : RE: genealogy of Daniel Smith and Thirza Straw According to Reflections of Waterborough Vallentine Straw (their spelling) was Pound keeper in 1787. I wasn't sure if pound keeper meant the same back then as it does now. So I looked it up in the same book and it says the stray animals were kept there until their owner claimed them. They had to pay a fine. On April 5, 1787 The town voted Vallentine in and the following spring the voted to build a town pound near Tobias Leighton's land 30 feet square and 7 feet high. Capt. John Smith was paid $12.00 for building it. That's all there was in that book. I didn't find him in the 1790 books so I checked Hamilton's of Waterborough and he is mentioned as Vanlantine Straw as one of the original petitioners for the Plantation of Massebesick. Again it says he was pound keeper.
Capt John and Abigail I stated that their daughter Ruth b abt 1756 m Israel Straw. Wrong! Ruth is a possible daughter and she did marry on 9 Dec 1778 in Waterboro Aaron Smith b 1753 a possible s/o of Thomas and Susannah Hutchinson Smith (Capt John's brother). this would make them 1st cousins. Guess I will ask Danny about this again. Then John and Abigail's daughter Mary b abt 1733 m Nathaniel Kimball 31 May 1798 Waterboro. It was another Mary that married Nathaniel Libby. Sorry to make the confusion even more difficult. This is the family of Thomas and Susannah Hutchinson Smith.
