LAURA E. SNYDER 90, a longtime resident of San Leandro died of a heart attack September 8th in her garden in San Leandro. She was born August 9, 1912 in Sacramento, CA, to Walter and Anna Belle Colby, a farming family from Clarksburg. Following graduation from UC Berkeley, and reciept of a teaching credential from San Francisco State, Laura taught three years in Elk Grove. In 1943 she and her husband moved to San leandro where they built their own home of adobe bricks made from soil on the property, and from timber taken from an old barn on the Clarksburg farm. Laura lived in that house until July of this year, having just recently moved to Forest Hill Manor in Pacific Grove. Laura's early interest included PTA, many years as a Girl Scout Leader and as a Sunday School teacher. Upon her husband's death in 1961, she returned to teaching; she taught at Highland School in Oakland until retiring in 1977. Laura was active in many organizations, serving two years as president of both the Association for American University Women, and Alpha Delta kappa, an international honorary sorority for teachers. She was also active in the California Retired Teachers Association and the ruth Group of First Christian Church in Oakland. Laura was preceded inA death by her husband , James, in 1961. She was the loving mother of Jeanne Turner and her son-in-law, Daniel, the beloved grandmother of Lindsay and Lauren Turner of Monterey, and sister of Georgia Williams of Ek Grove. She will be held in loving memory by her nieces and nephews as as her many friends as a peace maker and a person who was always there when they needer her. She could often be found working her garden. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 21st, at 11:00 am at The First Christian church on 29th and Fairmount Avenue in Oakland. Inurnment will take place at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that contributions be made to CRTA #59 c/o Rita Hammer, 26443, Montana Way, Hayward, CA 94544, a scholarship program for Cal State Hayward, or to Local School Project c.o Helen gibson, 413 Salfish Dr. Aptos CA 95003, an AAUW scholarship program for women's re-entry college at Cabrillo or UCSC.
