Some Leonard history: From Mannion's research at MUN on Irish immigration, I have learned of Francis Leonard b. Co. Waterford, Ireland 1760 who spent 22 years in Placentia (c. 1781-1803) as a servant in the fishery. Sweetman ledgers from 1799 show two of Francis's sons, John (boy by Francis) and Patrick (by Francis), sold fish at Point Verde, Placentia. Also, Placentia court records show that in 1803 Francis and 2-3 adult sons petitioned the court for a license to erect stage and cookroom at Oliver's Cove. A few short years later, a John Leonard and an Edward Leonard appear in a Christopher Spurrier & Co. ledger c. 1809-1815, recently discovered by Gail Murphy Taylor. Spurrier had business premises at Burin, Oderin, Barren Island and Isle Valen. (Worthy of note: other names from in and around St. Leonard's/Isle Valen appear in that ledger like Collins, Sullivan, Mahany/Mahony, Gaulton, Caul etc.) A few decades later, there is a 1838 Sweetman's ledger entry for Patrick Leonard. Mannion confirms that Sweetman did have an account with the Sullivans in Oliver's Cove in 1838. (Patrick may have been living in Francis Cove, Isle Valen by this time. Spurrier was bankrupt and gone by then, explaining the return to business dealings with Sweetman.) Below is a link to the Spurrier ledger. A big bouquet to Gail Murphy Taylor!
