www.findagrave.com George was the son of Mr Garfield and Mariette Clement. He married Mary White in July 1, 1884 in Humboldt, Iowa. They were the parents of Clement and Theodore[Greenlief Garfield 1894-1989] June 29, 1922 - Humboldt Independent - George Selwyn Garfield was born of New England parents in Kane county, Illinois where his parents were temporarily living on the 11th of June 1856. While he was still an infant the family returned to their native State, Vermont, where the subject of this sketch spent the first 20 years of his life. At 15 years of age he had lost both father and mother and he was left with nothing but his two hands and a great desire to obtain an education. Homes of relatives and friends were opened to him and by hard work on the stony hillsides of Vermont in summer and schooling in winter he became so efficient as to engage as a country school teacher. Later he entered and graduated from the state normal school at Randolph, Vermont. He taught a year in Pennsylvania and then came west and read law in an office in Decorah, Iowa. He took the Law Course at Iowa City and graduated in June of 1880. He opened a Law office in Humboldt in October of 1880, where he has continuously remained. In July 1884 he was married to Mary White. Two sons were born into this home, Clement W in 1891 and Theodore G in 1894. Both of these sons have entered successfully the practice of law - Clement has been with his father in Humboldt and Theodore in Ames. On June 21st in his usual health, he went to Sioux City to attend the anual meeting of the Iowa State Bar Association. On Friday the 23rd, all Humboldt was greatly shocked to hear that the lifeless body of this good man had been found in his room at the Martin Hotel. Death was evidently due to heart failure. The body was removed to Des Moines the following Sunday for cremation, where a short simple but impressive service was held, conducted by Rev Reman of the Des Moines Unitarian Church. A memorial service will probably be held in Unity church in Humboldt, Sunday July 9th. Mr Garfield has been, during his 42 years of residencee in Humboldt, indentified with the progressive intellectual and educational movements of the town. He fought tirelessly for the Library and it was largely through his personal efforts that the financial aid from the Carnegie fund was obtained. He gave the last few hundred dollars that enabled the committee to let the contract for the building. For over 20 years Mr Garfield was an active member of the school board and during most of this time he was president of the board, giving generously of his time and thought to all matters pertaining to our schools. A former superintendent, who has been a school man for many years, told the writer that Mr Garfield was the most attentive and efficient school board member he had ever known. His friendships were strong and abiding. Last summer he made a trip to New England to pay homage again to the few old friends who were left, those who had befriended him when an orphan boy. From the green rugged hills of Vermont he seemed to have learned a great patience and perseverance and courage and a quiet determination to do the best he could. When a boy his greatest pleasure was to find a copy of Shakespeare or Dickens or Thackeray and a quiet hour to read and this habit he carried through life, making him familiar with much of the best English literature.
