bullet  General Notes:

Robert Henry Zukowski (1849-1934)

Robert Henry Zukowski first appears in a census taken 29 June 1860. He is age 10 and living with his parents Thomas and Cynthia Zucoskie [spelled this way by census enumerator] the family is living in the 2nd Ward of Village [West Troy] in Albany County, NY. Robert's father Thomas born Poland is 52 and works at the Arsenal as an ammunition worker. His mother Cynthia is 42 and born in New York, probably in West Troy [now known as Watervliet] and has no occupation outside of the home. Robert has one older sister Josephine who is 21; single and lives at home. His older brother George is 18 and also works in the Arsenal as an ammunition worker. Two other brothers, Thomas J. Jr and Thomas Isydore Zukowski died young before Robert was born and are buried in the Gibbonsville Cemetery. A younger brother also named Thomas T. is age 6. Robert's maternal grandmother [his mother's mother] Jane Earl age 66 is also living with them and is widowed.
In June of 1870 Robert is 19 and living with his now widowed mother. He is working as a clerk in a shoe store. His father died sometime between 1865 and 1866 and is buried in the Gibbonsville Cemetery. Robert's mother is now 50, his sister Josephine still single and living at home is 30 and states she has one parent who is foreign born. [this would be Robert's father born in Poland who emigrated about 1834 and entered this country through the Port of New York.] Robert's brother George is now 28, lives at home with wife and family and works as a laborer. George is married to Sarah [last name unknown to me] who is age 29 and they have two daughters Synthia (Cynthia) J. age 4 and Mary L. who is 2.
In January of 1875 Robert and his brother George both sold property to their mother Cynthia. [Possibly their share of the property their father left to them. It may have been only a transfer rather than a sale.]
Sometime in 1875 or 1876 Robert married to Ellen A. [her last name unknown to me].
By 1878 Robert is working at the Arsenal and living on Montgomery Street in Watervliet.
By the time the census of 1880 is taken he and Ellen are living on Stafford St in Watervliet. Robert is now 30 yrs old and works in the Arsenal and Ellen is 20, having been born circa 1860. She keeps house and takes care of their son William T. Zukowski age 3 born Nov 1876
From 1883 to 1894 Robert and his family are living with his widowed mother on Albany Street in Watervliet and Robert is still working at the Arsenal.
In 1900 Robert and Ellen are living at 1317 2nd Ave in Watervliet. They have been married about 34 years [should be 25]. Robert now works as a Lock Tender on the Erie Canal at Lock #4. The following children appear in the household: a son William who is 24 and works as a moulder, daughter Ida who is 20 works in a laundry, daughter Nellie who is 14 works as a collar creaser and the rest are at home or school: daughter Jessie who is 12, son George who is 9, son Daniel who is 5 and son Joseph who is 2. Also still living with them is Cynthia Zukowski, Robert's eighty year old mother. She says she has been married 35 yrs [is actually widowed and transcriber may have mixed her marriage with her son's record], has had 6 children with 3 living [George, Robert and Thomas T.] Cynthia's father was born in England and her mother b. NY
By 1910 and still at the house on 2nd Ave Robert still works as a Lock Tender. His mother died in 1902 and is buried in the Gibbonsville Cemetery along with her husband and 2 young sons. Ellen is now 34 and has had seven children but only five are living. A son Robert Henry Jr born 1884 died at fourteen years of age of heart disease and a daughter Jennie died in 1898 at birth. Their son William has married and moved to Cohoes. At home are daughter Jessie and son George who both work in a woolen mill as "Spinners." Their son Daniel who is 17 works in a collar shop. Joseph their 10 year old son is at home.
In 1915 Robert is still at the 2nd Ave home. Ellen died in 1913 of Addison's Disease [disease of adrenal glands near kidney]. Robert no longer works. Living with him are his twenty year old son Daniel who is a tinsmith and fifteen year old son Joseph who does not work. Keeping house is Robert's married daughter Nellie Christie age 28 who has apparently separated from her husband. She is the mother of Robert J. Christie age 8 and Anna M. Christie age 11.
In 1920 he is still living in the house on 2nd Ave. He is now in his early 70s. Helen [Nellie] his daughter keeps house and works in a factory that makes collars. her daughter Anna now 18 works as an operator in a factory. Nellie's son Robert is no longer living there.
In 1925 Helen Christie is living on Russell Place in Watervliet and keeping house. Her son Robert now 18 years old has returned to live with her and is employed as a "printer." Anna has either married or died as she no longer is in the household. Robert Henry Zukowski is also living there at the age of 76.
By 1930 Nellie Christie at age 43 and widowed[divorced?] is renting a flat or house at 3 Thirteenth St in Watervliet. Living with her is her son Robert Christie age 28 who is a laborer at odd jobs. Also living there is Nellie's nephew, James Christie age 41 who works in the felt mills. Nellie's father Robert Henry Zukowski age 80 is in residence also.
According to his cemetery records Robert died 24 June 1934 at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 22 days. His last residence is listed as: 1251 Tenth Avenue in Colonie, New York. He is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, New York
