"As early as 1852 there stood on the east boundary of Mound City a log cabin in which was run a blaksmith shop by E. Porter Forbes. This was the first house to stand on the site of the town whcih was laid out five years later.
Forbes was born in Columbus. [census says NY] Came to MO in 1848. His father was a physician. He helped survey M.C. and was a blacksmith 18 yrs. In 1867 he moved to his farm 1/4 of section 19, twp 72, osrange 38 , 2 1/2 miles north of M. C.. Was the second post master of M. C. In 1852 he married Hannah Porter (sister of Cummings Porter) who died in 1858. Of three children, two Alfred C. and Bevin (sic) lived."
