He was a surveyor and overseer of a cotton mill. The family moved to Lowell MA where their children attended public school, and where James entered into the service of the Appleton Manufacturing Company. James married Mehitable Fisk, daughter of Deacon Ebenezer Fiske and Abigail Woodbury, on 14 Mar 1819 in Wilmot, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. (Mehitable Fisk was born on 18 Apr 1800 in Mt Vernon, New Hampshire, died on 22 May 1873 in Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire and was buried in Pine Street Cemetery, Manchester, New Hampshire.). The cause of her death was neuralgia of heart.
