Jackson Boys Now At Camp Pike, Ark., To Move
Date: Sunday, June 9, 1918 Paper: Jackson Citizen Patriot (Jackson, MI) Page: 13
News that the 87th Division at Camp Ike, ARK. in which several Jackson men are serving is soon to move to Camp Dix, NJ is contained in a letter from Private Clyde D. Straw of Headquarters Co. of 812 Engineers, to his cousin Miss Leora Daniels of Tekonsha. Private Straw was formerly of Concord. Several Jackson men are in machine gun companies at Camp Ike. the letter follows:
"Camp Pike, ARK
Dear Cousin and All,
I received your letter and was very glad to hear from you. I hope these few lines find you all well. I am feeling just fine and have some good news. Sometime between the first of June and the middle of the month the whole 87th Division is going to move to Camp Dix, New Jersey. We are packing now. We will stay there until our company or regiment reaches fighting strength and then we will take a short boat ride.
It is getting so hot here that I am glad we are going and it will also give me an opportunity to see more of the country. We might just as well be in France or on our way for the more that Uncle Sam gets over there the shorter the fight will be. I guess when the US boys get after the Germans good and strong they will find we are not in the war to kill women and children as they have done in their hellish fighting.
We are born to win and win we will for we are taught to win and the people of the U.S. A. are doing their bit even if money is the only chance they can get at the Huns. I am proud of the people of the United States and the good will they have and are showing by helping the Red Cross and buying Liberty Bonds. I am more than proud to be a soldier in this great war and I am longing for a chance to drive the Germans back.
This Army life is hard in some ways but we can stand it. We are a big family of boys and we soon act like brothers to each other. We have been taking our dinners with us and staying out all day to sketch but our colonel gave out orders for all work of that kind to be stopped at present, as we are going to move. The order came from General Sturgis who commands the 87th division.
With love to all,
Clyde"
