"I had back in 1990 a copy of a birth certificate sent to me by Montpelier Vermont showing Philando Goodell with Marilla Ainsworth as his mother and Daniel Goodell as his father."

Rootsweb message board September 2005 per Mary Hawkins- " I believe that Mary Amanda Goodell is my great Grandmother. I don't believe she and Fernando Goodell also called Philander Goodell were married when they had their first 5 children as he shows up with her in E. Montpelier on the 1870 census, the first 3 children say Mary from Duxbury with no last name, the twins and next children all have Atherton as mothers last name. and then when "Philander "Goodell and "Amanda Atherton got married in 1878 it was his first marriage they show up with the same children in Duxbury. My grandmothers name was Mary Amanda Cota on her marriage and death certificate, her birth certificate reads Mary Anne but I think that was a mistake, and the census in 1860 shows Mary Louizell born in 1839 which makes me think Mary was her actual first name."

Philander married Mary Amanda Atherton, daughter of Samuel Bement Atherton and Mary Straw, on 3 Oct 1878 in Duxbury, Washington County, Vermont. (Mary Amanda Atherton was born on 6 May 1839 in Duxbury, Washington County, VT and died on 26 Jan 1883 in Rutland, Vermont.). The cause of her death was complications of child birth.
