VERSHIRE - Avis M. Straw, 85, life long resident of Vershire, died Monday night, May 21, at the Hanover Terrace Nursing Home in Hanover, N.H. She was born Dec. 30, 1915 in Vershire, the daughter of Fred and Edith (Lake) Straw.
She attended the Mill Village School in Vershire and then worked for a short time at the Wilder Heel Factory in Wilder. She was self employed, working the family farm and logging. She raised dairy cows, chickens, sheep and geese.
She was a member of the Vershire Bible Church and the Vershire Historical Society. She always made a home for any stray (animal or person) she came across. She had a love for horses and a special place in her heart for all children, and enjoyed cooking almost as much as her friends and family enjoyed eating it.
She is survived by two brothers; Everett Straw and Walter Straw both of Vershire, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Griffin and her dear friend and life companion, Arthur Hazen, who died Aug. 30, 1988.
Funeral services will be held Friday May 25, at 2 p.m. at the Vershire Bible Church in Vershire with Pastor Gary Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow in the Village Cemetery in Vershire. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea is in charge of arrangements.
Due to her great love of children, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the children's charity of one's choice.
